Vincent Matthews
I was drawing before I could speak. My background is one of working as a designer in specialist architectural interior design for Sibyl Colefax and John Fowler Ltd companies, in their studio for 26 years, after studying at art and design colleges. I left my job in London as senior designer 3 years ago, to pursue my dream of doing art. I have been drawing for most of my life and have always had a fascination in detailing, buildings, landscape, people and all things visual.
My first commission was at 16 years of age. I rediscovered my passion for painting and producing artwork about 6 years ago, doing various short courses at CityLit in Covent Garden and then completing a two year fine art course there, followed by a couple of short etching courses at Camberwell Art college.
I love variety, as it keeps one fresh and each subject or medium pushes one further into developing one’s own style and interest. My work ranges from etching, intaglio engraving onto copper (which I am still learning), oil painting, watercolour, drawing in pencil or ink and photography. My subject matter stretches from traditional architectural landscape to portrait commissions and contemporary abstraction (as I love to play with images, as well as developing areas of detail). Every piece of artwork that I produce involves a drawing process, whether it be with a pencil, pen or a brush, building the pictures up in layers. Please look at my website, to see the type of work that I do.
Since completing my fine art course in 2007, I have participated in an art exhibition in an East End gallery, two small prints shows at Seal Chart Etchers Studio, South East Open Studios, The Fringe Exhibition at Artloco Gallery (Ticehurst) and the Battle Contemporary Fine Art Fair.
